California Governor Gavin Newsom has continued to implement the stay at home order meaning many more remain unemployed.

More than 3.8 million laid-off workers applied for unemployment benefits last week as the U.S. economy slid further into a crisis that is becoming the most devastating since the 1930s.

Unemployment benefits are to be given to lift off financial burden for those who have been laid off or terminated by their jobs. Under the CARES Act, many Americans have been receiving their one-time stimulus check of $1,200 and an additional $500 per child.

The federal stimulus package also added a $600 weekly payment to those under the unemployment program. This added payment to the unemployment benefits allowed many Americans to have a higher salary than they had at their job.

Twitter has been a crucial social media platform for voicing people’s opinion about essential workers and unemployed.

Governor Newsom has stated that California will now make adjustments to closures of businesses. Some retail businesses will begin to open Friday May 6th 2020 with modifications explained in Newsom’s tweet.

Re-opening some businesses is part of Newsom’s stage 2 in the lift of the shelter in place order. With low risk workplaces opening there will slowly be a decrease in unemployment rates in California. Californians are still expected to practice social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
